THE MOST AMAZING GOSPEL MOVIES OF THE PAST DECADE SERIES

THE ENCOUNTER: A REVIEW

This is an awesome movie that appeals to me like a favourite music track; I can always watch it over and over again without really getting bored. It’s so life-touching that every time you watch it, you’ll definitely feel refreshed in your spirit. It’s loaded and there is so much that can be gotten from it.

Jesus speaks of His thoughts towards his “clients” at the diner.

The story is about five individuals whose paths cross when a closed-off road seemingly hinders their respective journeys, only to be led to the symbolic Last Chance Diner where they meet with a man called Jesus.

When asked how He inexplicably knows the details of their lives, He makes a most sensible statement, which became my favourite quote in the movie: “I’m Jesus; I know everything.”

Melissa listens with rapt attention to Jesus.

Imagine meeting with Jesus face-to-face, what would your reaction be? What would you say to Him? I bet many of us would ask Him questions, maybe most popular of which will be “Who created God?” lol. Well, the characters here are granted that opportunity and what follows are down-to-earth conversations that would engage us for the ninety-minute runtime of this movie.

Nick is mad at Jesus.

Jesus (Bruce Marchiano) tries to mend the breaking marriage between Hank (Jamie Nieto) and Catherine (Danah Davis), as well as to guide Melissa (Jaci Velasquez) on the marital choice she’s about to make. He reaches out to hurting-from-abuse Kayla (Madison Gibney), while the major subject matter of the story is Jesus’ honouring of the prayers of Sadie (Elizabeth Ince) for her grandson, Nick (Steve “Sting” Borden).

Jesus and Kayla

Nick plays hard-to-get and rebuffs every attempt Jesus makes to get through to Him. One of the most touching parts of the movie is the look on Jesus’ face as Nick decides to go his own way and follows Officer Deville (Kass Connors), which by the way, is a creative name for you-kno-who.

Jesus is pained at Nick’s choice.

We also get a last scene which shows us that Jesus is on another rescue mission to a character played by Director, David A.R. White (Redemption Road, God’s Not Dead, Me Again). This gives us the idea that there would be a sequel, and indeed, there is a follow-up to this movie in The Encounter: Paradise Lost. It is also worthy of note that in 2016, a short TV series based on the two movies was released.

Take that, Officer Deville!

Though a few times, the characters speaking are not in sharp focus, and there are little continuity goofs, this is nonetheless an enjoyable movie for you to watch before you actually meet with Jesus face-to-face in heaven.

All power belongs to Jesus.

Have you watched this movie? What did you like most about it? Did you understand all the answers that Jesus gave? Please comment in the section below.

Till the next post, stay renewed in your mind!

Did you know: Bruce Marchiano actually played Jesus in The Visual Bible: Matthew, which was released in 1993; 17 years before The Encounter was released in 2010? The picture on Jesus’ driver’s license in The Encounter was most likely taken from that movie.

  1. I’ve watched The Encounter several times since I first discovered it. This film reached my soul right from the TV screen. I haven’t been so emotionally entranced since. Bruce Marchiano represents JESUS so much more relatable than other portrayals of our Lord. His kind, mesmerizing eyes ,tone of his voice and mannerisms are nothing short of hypnotic. Everytime I watch The Encounter I always come away with a new message pertaining to my situation at the moment.
